The menu of features will grow in the future, tapping into the rich seam of possibilities online - and making your image experience ever more rewarding.
Automatic updating of camera’s time and location info

Two kinds of credit information can be embedded in pictures

This speeds up the process of sharing images online, ensuring you don't have to enter information every time you upload a photo.
Always have your camera ready for the latest features
Nikon will send notifications to the SnapBridge app when new firmware is available for the camera that your smartphone is connected to. This way, you can enjoy all the latest camera features, without missing firmware updates.
The 24.2 effective megapixels crisply depict the texture of the hair and skin.
Thanks to the standard sensitivity up to ISO 25600, even pictures of dark indoor scenes come out beautifully.
Get a taste of D-SLR quality: Crisp action shots, portraits with soft backgrounds and more
If the pictures you take with your smart device leave you wanting more, just wait until you get your hands on the D3400. Images of indoor gigs and parties capture the best moments with minimal blur. Majestic landscape shots taken while hiking stay tack sharp even after aggressive cropping. Impressive portraits make your subjects stand out against beautifully soft backgrounds. Zooming in on distant subjects is possible without losing any image resolution. Thanks to a range of exclusive Nikon technologies, the D3400 lets you do all this - and much, much more.
Technologies behind the image quality: DX-format image sensor featuring 24.2 effective megapixels, EXPEED 4 image-processing engine, Picture Control system and NIKKOR lenses
The superb images you get with the D3400 are attained through a combination of unrivaled Nikon technologies working together. The D3400 achieves a wide standard sensitivity range of ISO 100-25600. Thanks to its EXPEED 4 image-processing engine, which effectively reduces image noise, you get clear pictures even in dark scenes. Harnessing 24.2 effective megapixels and the superb optical performance of Nikon’s NIKKOR lenses, the camera renders your subjects in beautiful, crisp pictures. Finally, there’s Nikon’s image creation system, Picture Control, which helps make your images look even better.
Beautifully balancing light and shade: Active D-Lighting
In pictures of outdoor activities under the sun or a room with a bright window, the details and color gradation in a bright sky or dark shadows may sometimes be lost. But thanks to the EXPEED 4 image-processing engine, the D3400’s Active D-Lighting preserves more tones in both areas, capturing moments with true-to-life brightness.
Adjust the atmosphere to fit your vision: Nikon’s Picture Control system
Picture Control: Monochrome
Picture Control is Nikon’s simple image creation system. The D3400 incorporates seven types of preset Picture Control - Standard, Neutral, Vivid, Monochrome, Portrait, Landscape and Flat - which you can select before shooting, according to the subject and situation. Each Picture Control option lets you fine-tune image characteristics, such as sharpening and contrast, depending on your own creative intentions. Picture Control can also be set using the guide mode.

A quick solution for each subject: Scene modes
Scene modes are an easy way to get great pictures, without the need to adjust numerous settings. Simply rotate the mode dial to one of six icons according to your subject - portrait, landscape, child, sports, close up, and night portrait. The D3400 automatically chooses the most appropriate settings and delivers beautiful results.

Step-by-step assistance, whenever you need it: Guide mode
Even if you’ve never used a D-SLR before, the D3400 is easy to get to grips with. Its built-in guide mode is designed to help beginners achieve the pictures they want, while learning more about D-SLR photography along the way. Guide mode leads you through each step of the process, from setting up the camera to shooting, viewing/deleting and retouching images. For instance, if you want to take a uniquely D-SLR-style picture with a blurred background that emphasizes the subject, simply rotate the mode dial to “GUIDE” and select “soften backgrounds” from the “Shoot/Advanced operation” option. The camera displays an assist image, so you can confirm how the setting will change your picture.
Guide Mode: Show Water Flowing
Guide Mode: Soften Backgrounds
Take advantage of a large LCD monitor: Live view shooting
With its large, 7.5-cm/3.0-in. LCD monitor, the D3400 lets you enjoy comfortable live view shooting, the way you would with a smartphone or compact digital camera. Live view shooting is great for casual snapshots, as well as for still-life shooting where you want razor-sharp focus. Moreover, the camera’s approx. 100% frame coverage makes it simpler to confirm your shot from edge to edge.
Easy shooting in live view: Scene auto selector
When shooting in live view, setting the mode dial to auto or auto (flash off) enables the camera to automatically activate the most suitable scene mode. The icon of the selected mode, such as landscape or portrait, is displayed in the top left of the monitor.
The D3400 scene modes activated by scene auto selector
Achieve better focus in live view and movie shooting: Four AF-area modes
Four AF-area modes are available for live view and movie shooting. Face-priority AF is especially handy when you want to focus on friends’ faces in commemorative shots. Normal-area AF helps you achieve tack-sharp focus on static subjects, while wide-area AF is convenient for landscape pictures. In these two modes, you can move the focus point anywhere in the frame by using the multi selector. Meanwhile, subject-tracking AF is convenient for moving subjects. Used in combination with full-time-servo AF, you can easily capture running friends or pets in sharp focus.
Shoot more softly: Quiet shutter release
The D3400’s quiet shutter release with minimized shutter sound lets you shoot quietly in situations such as a wedding ceremony or theater.
Experience high-quality videos with your D-SLR: D-Movie supports Full HD videos at 60p
The D3400 doesn’t just shoot superb photos: it’s also capable of creating smooth, sharp Full HD movies at 60p. The camera yields beautiful videos even in dark scenes, thanks to a wide standard sensitivity range of ISO 100-25600 - the same as when shooting stills. Your videos can also take advantage of the beautiful background blur and superior rendering of NIKKOR lenses.
Enjoy your stills and movies on HDTV: HDMI compatibility
The D3400 supports HDMI, allowing you to play back your images and movies on an HDTV. The camera is also compatible with HDMI-CEC (Consumer Electronics Control), meaning you can operate it remotely using the remote control of an HDMI-CEC-supported TV.
Convient and comfortable
Capture moments in fast action: 5-fps continuous shooting
Whether you’re on the street, the beach or the dance floor, sometimes the best moments only last for a split second. The D3400 offers high-speed continuous shooting of up to approx. 5 frames per second, that is sustainable up to 100 frames. At that pace, you won’t miss a thing.
Track moving subjects with confidence: Viewfinder shooting
One of the unique benefits of a D-SLR is its viewfinder. If you want to track fast or erratic subjects from a distance, it’s the most surefire way of nailing the shot. Unlike taking pictures with a smart device, viewfinder shooting encourages you to take a secure grip of the camera, keeping it level and minimizing camera shake.
Cleanly capture moving subjects: 11-point AF system and four AF-area modes
The D3400’s quick, accurate 11-point AF system helps you capture unpredictable and fast-moving subjects in sharp focus. A cross-type sensor covers the most frequently used center area to deliver superior subject-acquisition and focusing performance. Nikon’s unique Scene Recognition System helps the D3400 detect subjects and changes in composition rapidly. There are four AF-area modes to choose from. In auto-area AF mode, the camera detects subject, foreground and background to achieve focus at the appropriate point. In 3D-tracking (11 points) mode, the focus point automatically changes to track the subject as long as the shutter-release button is pressed halfway, even if the subject moves or the composition changes. Single-point AF and dynamic-area AF are also available.
Beautiful pictures, even when using auto controls: Scene Recognition System
Utilizing a 420-pixel RGB sensor and its high-pixel-count image sensor, the D3400 is able to detect fine variations in the brightness and colors of a scene before shooting. The results are reflected in autofocus, auto exposure, i-TTL flash control and auto white balance, etc., for accurate auto control. Moreover, the D3400 easily detects faces, and uses this information to zoom in on faces during playback, as well as for autofocus, auto exposure and auto white balance.
Small and easy to hold: compact, lightweight ergonomic body in a choice of two colors
The D3400 is designed to offer great image quality within a small, stylish D-SLR body. Its comfortable, ergonomic grip allows you to hold the camera tightly and achieve pictures with reduced image blur. Paired with the AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR kit lens featuring a retractable system, it makes for a remarkably compact D-SLR system. Its sleek, sophisticated form factor will fit perfectly into any lifestyle, and comes in a choice of two colors, black or red.
Long-life battery lasts for approx. 1,200 shots per charge: EN-EL14a Rechargeable Li-ion Battery
You don’t have to worry about your battery running out while taking pictures with the D3400. Its efficient, energy-saving design allows you to shoot approx. 1,200 shots per charge with the EN-EL14a Rechargeable Li-ion Battery. Even when the camera is constantly connected to your smart device via SnapBridge for automatic image transfer, you can keep going for hours.
Trim while zooming in: versatile playback options
The D3400 offers a wider variety of playback options. With this camera, you can trim out the portion of the image that you are zooming in on, allowing quick and convenient edits. The camera’s large, 24.2-megapixel images lend themselves to aggressive cropping, giving you greater flexibility to create exactly the picture you want.
Shortcut for settings and retouch menu: i button
Press the i button to change setting during shooting.
Press the i button during playback to access retouch menu.
The i button, located on the back of the camera, provides a convenient way to change settings quickly while shooting, without having to scroll through any menus. It can also be used to rate favorite pictures quickly, select pictures for transfer to a smart device, or access the retouch menu during playback.
Your assistant for low-light shooting: Built-in pop-up flash
When you’re shooting in low-light, backlit or shaded conditions, the D3400 detects the scene and automatically triggers and fires its built-in flash. The flash produces just the right amount of light for the situation, resulting in an attractive, natural-looking image.
Long-lasting quality assured: Durable shutter
The D3400’s shutter is tested for 100,000 cycles with the unit actually loaded on the camera. Its proven durability means you can continue to enjoy shooting with the D3400 for a long time.
Take your creativity further
Choose your view: NIKKOR lenses
Image quality largely depends on the performance of the lens you’re using. Thanks to advanced optical and production technologies accumulated over the years, all of Nikon’s NIKKOR lenses, including kit lenses, achieve excellent image reproduction at high resolutions. Nikon has implemented cutting-edge technologies such as Vibration Reduction (VR) which compensates for camera shake, and the wide variety of NIKKOR lenses lets you enjoy a whole new world of creative expression.
AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR
This compact and lightweight zoom lens incorporates a stepping motor for fast and quiet AF operation. Two aspherical lens elements minimize lens aberrations. The VR system provides an effect equivalent to a shutter speed 4.0 stops faster. A setting system using the camera menus allows some lens settings on the camera. A great choice for entry-class D-SLR users.
AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR
Telephoto zoom lens offering approx. 4.3x zoom coverage. With a stepping motor ensuring fast and quiet AF operation, this lens is suitable for shooting in quiet situations. Its VR system, which can be activated via the D3400’s shooting menu, provides an effect equivalent to a shutter speed 4.0 stops faster, while its ED glass element contributes to achieving superb image quality.
AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G
Thanks to a maximum aperture of f/1.8, this lens helps create striking portraits with beautiful soft backgrounds that make your subject stand out. The large aperture also ensures that your pictures turn out great in low light, even without a tripod.
AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G
This compact, lightweight micro lens dynamically captures small subjects, while creating beautiful bokeh. It’s perfectly suited for taking stunning close-ups of subjects ranging from flowers to cakes.
Turn VR ON/OFF from the menu
The D3400’s shooting menu allows you to activate optical VR when compatible lenses are being used. Once turned on, an indicator light appears in the information display, and VR is activated when the shutter-release button is pressed halfway.
Control the light, improve image quality: Nikon Speedlights
Light makes all the difference in photography. While the D3400 has a convenient built-in pop-up flash, employing an optional Speedlight can take your images to the next level.
Compact, lightweight SB-500 Speedlight with high-performance LED light (optional)
The SB-500 is a compact, lightweight flash, which provides many Nikon Creative Lighting System functions with just two R6/AA-size batteries. With a guide number of 24/78.7 (m/ft, ISO 100, 23°C/73.4°F), its flash head tilts up to 90° and rotates horizontally 180° for bounce flash which adds natural light. The built-in LED light (with a choice of three output levels) has a color temperature similar to sunlight, and can serve as an auxiliary light for both still and movie shooting.
Tilting the SB-500 flash head upward, the light bouncing off the ceiling softly illuminates the subjects without overexposing the exterior view in the background.
Hands-free photography made easy: ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control (optional)
The optional ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control is a hassle-free solution when you want to release the camera shutter from a distance - ideal in situations such as when taking group portraits.
Browsing software for still images and movies: ViewNX-i (free download)
ViewNX-i offers a convenient way to view your JPEG, RAW and movie files, and utilize them in coordination with other Nikon software. When you want to share your images, the software simplifies the process of uploading to various social media. And by activating the included ViewNX-Movie Editor software, you can perform simple movie edits, too.
