Product Description
iMac Retina. Now in colossal and ginormous.
The idea behind iMac has never wavered: to craft the ultimate desktop experience. The best display, paired with high-performance processors, graphics, and storage - all within an incredibly thin, seamless enclosure. And that commitment continues with the revolutionary 27-inch 5K model, it delivers such spectacular image quality that everything else around you seems to disappear. Adding up to the most immersive iMac experience yet - and another big, beautiful step forward.
Retina Display
More than just a display, it’s a vision.
Accuracy. Brightness. Clarity. Regardless of how you measure the quality of a display, Retina is in a class by itself. The pixel density is so high that you won’t detect a single one while using iMac. Text is so sharp, you’ll feel like you’re reading email and documents on a printed page. And with a new, wider color gamut, the Retina display is able to deliver even more available colors - 25 percent more. So every photo and video you see appears even more true to life.
For the 4K camera in your pocket.
The new iPhone 6s shoots gorgeous 4K video. And on iMac with Retina display, both iMovie and Final Cut Pro give you the resolution - and responsiveness - to edit in 4K, turning your footage into a phenomenal viewing experience.
Design
Innovation from edge to cutting edge.
An incredible amount of engineering was required to bring the Retina display to the iMac family. Witness a design that’s just 5 mm at its edge - yet entirely capable of making everything around you fade into the distance. This ensures that nothing gets between you and your favorite content. Seamless and beautiful, iMac with Retina display is an elegant addition to your workspace, representing a depth of technology at the height of design.
Performance
Built for speed.
And everything else.
Faster and more powerful than ever, the 27-inch iMac is equipped with a sixth-generation Intel Core processor and the latest AMD high-performance graphics. Deliver stirring visual effects with maximum impact - at maximum speed.
Apple Accessories
Redesigned. Rechargeable. Remarkable.
The all-new Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse 2, and Magic Trackpad 2 have been redesigned to make every interaction feel amazing. From a built-in rechargeable battery to a new lower profile, they’ve been enhanced to deliver more comfort and functionality than ever before. Paired with iMac, they work magic together.
Magic Keyboard | Magic Mouse 2 | Magic Trackpad 2 |
Redesigned with a lower profile and increased stability that makes typing with precision a breeze. | A new design gives our Multi-Touch mouse a solid build and a smoother glide for quality you can feel. | Now with Force Touch technology that lets you press a little deeper on a larger, click-anywhere surface - and do a lot more. |
Connectivity
Fast connections for high performance.
iMac is astonishingly thin. But it’s jam-packed with advanced technology. Two Thunderbolt 2 ports come standard on all iMac models and deliver blazing-fast data transfer for external drives and cameras. Four USB 3 ports give you plenty of options for connecting peripherals, including your printer, video devices, and more. And with ultrafast three-stream Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 wireless technology, you’re instantly connected to all your favorite content.
OS X El Capitan
The world’s most advanced desktop operating system.
OS X is what makes a Mac a Mac. Not only is it designed to be intuitive and easy to use, but it’s also engineered to take full advantage of the Retina display, so you’ll see everything on your desktop with stunning clarity. It features an incredible collection of apps you’ll use - and love - every day. And it’s designed to enable your Mac and iOS devices to work together in amazing ways.
Built-in Apps
Our best built-in apps.
The best they’ve ever looked.
Every new Mac comes with Photos, iMovie, GarageBand, Pages, Numbers, and Keynote. So you can be creative right from the start. You also get great apps for email, surfing the web, sending texts, and making FaceTime calls - there’s even an app for finding new apps.
iCloud
Everything you love on your iMac. On all your devices.
iCloud stores your content and lets you access your music, photos, calendars, contacts, and more from whatever device you’re using. And with iCloud Drive, you can safely store all your presentations, spreadsheets, PDFs, images, and any other kind of document in iCloud - and access them from your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or PC.2
Design
Pixel by pixel, a masterpiece.
iMac has always harnessed the latest technology - and taken it further - to make the ultimate all-in-one better and better. And the Retina display is a testament to that. We pushed the limits of pixel density so you can see everything with pinpoint accuracy. We questioned every method of integrated design to achieve a remarkable level of fit and finish. The result? A beautiful, impossibly thin display of color and contrast - and zero compromise.
Retina Display
Precision. Repeated 14.7 million times.
Every millimeter of the Retina display was designed, engineered, and built to the most exacting standards. Something that 14.7 million pixels makes exceedingly clear. As does a 1.4 mm thin display panel designed around the human eye - so every interaction feels as natural as can be. It’s that attention to detail that inspired the Retina 5K display, it delivers a larger color palette with more accuracy.
Wider Color Palette
True-to-life color. Alive onscreen.
Many of the brilliant, unique colors you see in the real world never make it to your screen. A wider color gamut makes more of these real-life colors available on the Retina display. A striking 25 percent more. So whether it’s a sunset at the beach or your favorite football team’s jerseys, you’ll see them just as you saw them - on a display that’s more vibrant than ever.
25 percent more available colors. 100 percent jaw-dropping.
To see color as it appears in real life, you’ve got to capture the ones you’re missing. And a wider color gamut does just that. Retina moves well beyond the typical sRGB display with an all-new P3 color gamut. This is achieved by shifting the Retina display away from standard white LEDs to advanced red-green phosphor LEDs. Now all three colors - red, green, and blue - are more equally represented and show off real-world color with more balance and precision.
The color you shoot is the color you see.
Many cameras, including DSLRs and professional video cameras, can capture a far wider range of color than the typical sRGB color gamut. And with a new P3-based wider gamut, the iMac Retina display is able to bring more of those real-world colors to the screen. So go back and reprocess those RAW images you’ve saved - and reveal color you haven’t seen in them before.
Engineering
Innovation.
On top of innovation.
Engineering the Retina display involved the precise calibration of 23 layers that make up a display panel that’s just 1.4 mm thin. And out of that process we made advancements to improve not only the resolution but also the quality of the entire iMac display. So in addition to the incredible detail, you’ll see blacker blacks, more vivid colors, and images that practically jump off the screen.
Orchestrating the performance of 14.7 million pixels.
A more advanced timing controller.
The timing controller, or "TCON," is the brains of the display - it tells each pixel what to do and when to do it. But even the most powerful timing controllers available couldn’t manage the number of pixels on the iMac Retina 4K and 5K displays. So we created a new one - a single, supercharged chip that’s able to command up to 14.7 million pixels.
Clearing the way for signal quality.
Organic passivation.
With so many pixels on Retina display screens, clear communication between them requires organic passivation, or "overpass" technology. It separates the pixels from the signals that tell them when and how to light up, preventing any "cross-talk," or interference, that could result from putting so many pixels so close together. This maintains the quality of the image onscreen while those signals are being transmitted.
Delivering true-to-life imagery from every angle.
Photo alignment.
To improve on-axis contrast, we implemented an advanced process called photo alignment. This involves shining UV light to create a uniform terrain across the film coating on the TFT and color filter, so when the liquid crystal molecules are exposed, they lie exactly where they should. Better-aligned molecules mean you see better contrast when you’re directly in front of the display.
Compensation ?lm.
A display like this is the kind that people gather around. And at this size, even when you’re looking at the center of the screen, you see the corners at an angle, or off-axis. To make sure the contrast is perfect from every angle, we use a compensation film that controls how the light exits the display. The result is a display with truer colors, no matter where you view it from.
Enclosure
5 millimeters thin. Just the right size to do something big.
The first iMac was a revolution: An all-in-one computer that put everything - display, processor, graphics, storage, memory, and more - inside one simple, stylish enclosure. Today’s iMac includes the most advanced, most brilliant desktop display we’ve ever built, and it’s filled with the latest high-performance technologies. Yet it’s still just 5 mm thin at its edge.
Seamless design.
One of the biggest challenges our engineers faced with the iMac enclosure was how to join the front to the back. The enclosure is so thin, it’s not possible to weld the pieces using traditional methods. So we utilized a process called friction-stir welding. It combines intense friction-generated heat and pressure to intermix the molecules of the two aluminum surfaces - creating a seamless, precise, and superstrong join.
Environment
iMac and the planet.
Energy efficient. | Environmentally friendly. | Responsibly designed. |
27-inch iMac with Retina display feature our highest-resolution displays ever, powerful graphics, and the world’s most advanced desktop operating system. Yet each uses just 1.2 watts of electricity in sleep mode. | iMac is free of many harmful toxins, including mercury, arsenic, beryllium, BFRs, and PVC. It’s also made from materials such as aluminum and glass, which are more likely to be recycled and reused. In fact, the iMac base is made from 30 percent recycled aluminum and the iMac speaker enclosure is made with 30 percent post-consumer recycled plastic. | As a result of all our efforts, iMac far exceeds the stringent low power requirements set by the EPA, giving it ENERGY STAR 6.1 qualification. And it has earned the highest rating of Gold from EPEAT, which evaluates the environmental impact of a product based on how recyclable it is, how much energy it uses, and how it’s designed and manufactured. |
Performance
Built for speed. And everything else.
You know iMac by its incredibly thin enclosure. But that just sets the stage for massive performance. With a new Intel Core processor, the latest AMD graphics, and Thunderbolt 2, iMac delivers lightning-fast speed. And striking power.
Processors
Think fast. We did.
An all-new sixth-generation Intel Core processor in the 27-inch iMac - at up to 4.0GHz - and 1867MHz memory. You couldn’t ask for more speed. Yet Turbo Boost 2.0 gives you even more when you’re using processor-intensive applications like Logic Pro or Final Cut Pro. It all takes place behind the scenes, but you’ll see the difference in performance.
Graphics
Images that render you speechless.
The latest AMD high-performance graphics give the 27-inch iMac with Retina 5K display up to 3.7 teraflops of graphics compute power. Deliver visual effects and 3D graphics that exhibit raw power in its most polished form.
Ultrafast flash.
For maximum performance, you can configure iMac with up to 1TB of PCIe-based flash storage that’s now up to 2.5 times faster than the previous version.2 Delivering up to 1800 MBps of sequential read performance, pure flash storage is the fastest way to blaze through the most demanding tasks.
Thunderbolt 2
Blazing-fast data transfer.
Each of the two ultrafast, ultraflexible Thunderbolt 2 ports significantly expand the capabilities of iMac. For example, you can connect high-performance peripherals and move data up to 40 times faster than with USB 2, and up to 25 times faster than with FireWire 800. You also have more than enough bandwidth - up to 20 Gbps - to daisy-chain multiple high-speed devices and still maintain maximum throughput.
Wireless
Up to three times faster Wi-Fi.
With three-stream 802.11ac technology, iMac takes desktop Wi-Fi to unprecedented speeds. Simply connect to an 802.11ac base station - such as AirPort Extreme or AirPort Time Capsule - and reach data rates of up to 1.3 Gbps.3 That’s triple the previous 802.11n standard. You also get double the channel bandwidth, with 80MHz-wide channels providing more room for more data to flow faster than ever.
OS X
It’s what makes a Mac a Mac.
OS X is the operating system that powers every Mac. Built on a rock-solid UNIX foundation, it’s engineered to take full advantage of what the hardware is capable of. Across-the-board refinements have made OS X El Capitan even more powerful and easier to use, while maintaining the elements essential to Mac. As with every Apple product, each detail is obsessed over: from the distinctive icons in the Dock to the streamlined toolbars to the fluidity of navigating everything from photos to web pages. Because when it comes to a great experience, the difference is in the details.

New system font
OS X El Capitan introduces San Francisco - a new system font designed for optimal readability on a Mac and especially on a Retina display.
Translucency

You can send driving directions from your Mac to your iPhone. Add a meeting to your calendar on your Mac and receive an alert on your iPad. Even start a Messages conversation on your iPhone and finish it on your Mac. If you’re an Apple Music member, your entire library lives in the cloud, so you can always access all your music without it taking up any space on your devices. And iCloud Drive lets you access all your documents on your Mac and iOS devices and even on a PC. So your files will go wherever you do.
Security was the ?rst thought.
Not an afterthought.
OS X is engineered with advanced technologies that are constantly working together to keep your Mac and the information on it safe. Sandboxing helps protect your system by isolating apps from each other, as well as from your system and your data. Customizable privacy settings keep your personal information under your control. Find My Mac helps you locate your Mac on a map, set a passcode remotely, and more.
The best way to keep your Mac secure is to keep your software up to date. The Mac App Store notifies you when an update is available. And because OS X El Capitan is a free upgrade, it’s easy to keep your Mac safe with the latest security features and enhancements.
Compatible with Windows.
The versatility and power of OS X help a Mac fit in just about anywhere - including Windows networks. Want to transfer your files, photos, and other data from a Windows PC? OS X lets you do that easily with Migration Assistant. If you want to run Windows on your Mac, you can do that with Boot Camp.5 OS X has built-in support for Microsoft Exchange, so you can use your Mac at home and at work and keep all your messages, meetings, and contacts in sync. And, of course, you can work with popular file types such as JPG, MP3, and PDF, as well as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents.
Accessibility built in.
OS X comes standard with a wide range of assistive technologies that help people with disabilities experience what the Mac has to offer, including many features you won’t find in other operating systems - at any price. For example, the built-in VoiceOver screen reader, available in over 30 languages, makes it possible for those who are blind or have low vision to control their computers using key commands or gestures on a Multi-Touch trackpad. Switch Control makes it easier to navigate menus and operate basic controls such as volume, brightness, eject, and media playback. Magic Keyboard The redesigned Magic Keyboard comes standard with your iMac. It’s wireless and rechargeable (so you won’t be replacing batteries), with an ultracompact, edge-to-edge design that wastes no surface space. It has an improved scissor mechanism, optimized key travel, and a lower profile that increase control and comfort. And it pairs immediately with your iMac right out of the box. Magic Mouse 2 The new design of Magic Mouse 2 lets it glide more smoothly across your desk. And since it supports Multi-Touch, you can use simple gestures on its surface to do things such as swipe between web pages and scroll through documents. So if you prefer to use a wireless mouse but want some of the benefits of Multi-Touch, Magic Mouse 2 is a great choice. Magic Trackpad 2 If you prefer using a trackpad, Magic Trackpad 2 gives you the full range of Multi-Touch gestures and introduces Force Touch to the desktop. Sensors underneath the trackpad surface detect subtle differences in the amount of pressure you apply, bringing more functionality to your fingertips and enabling a deeper connection to your content. This new design, along with a lower profile, makes it even more comfortable to use. |
